I lived with my family in Morioka, Japan from January - August, 1994. Morioka is located in Iwate prefecture which is in Tohoku region (northern portion of Honshu, the main island). During that time I worked at the Tohoku branch of the Forestry & Forest Products Research Institute. This sabatical was funded by my agency, the USDA Forest Service as well as by a grant from the National Science Foundation and the Japanese Science and Technology Agencey (STA).
When I first arrived at the FFPRI lab, their internet connection was not completed so I would ride my bicycle to the Tohoku National Agricultural Experiment Station to read my email.
I spent one week working in Hokkaido at the Hokkaido Forestry Research Center in Bibai.
